A lot of tax pros are afraid of AI. We’re unsure how it fits into our workflow, what it means for our jobs and whether we even want to touch it. But ignoring it? That’s not the move.
I came across this video featuring my friend Ben Alarie, co-founder of Blue J and a tax law professor, and I think it’s one every CPA should watch. It’s a clear, grounded conversation about how AI is being used right now to enhance — not replace — tax professionals. This isn’t some hype-y vision of the future. It’s actually happening.
What stood out to me? Two big things:
AI isn’t replacing humans; it’s elevating them. Ben talks about how his law students are using tools like ChatGPT and Blue J to produce better work. Not only are they getting more done, they’re enjoying the work more. That’s a shift we don’t talk about enough.
The arms race is already on. Tax authorities are using AI. Firms are using AI. If you’re not exploring these tools, you’re falling behind. And no, you don’t need to become a programmer. You just need to be open to using tools that make you better at what you already do.
This isn’t about fear. It’s about opportunity. If you’ve been avoiding AI because you don’t know where to start, this video is a great way to dip your toe in. You’ll see how AI is being used in tax today, and why the future is less about replacement and more about reinvention.
Great article Jody! Hope you are enjoying tax season!
