You agree to the privacy policy below, and the Privacy Policy for Substack, the technology provider.

Privacy Policy for The Radical New Vision

Last Updated: April 11, 2025

Introduction

Welcome to The Radical New Vision (the "Newsletter"). We value your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains how The Radical New Vision (referred to as "we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects your information when you subscribe to or read our Newsletter, which is hosted on the Substack platform.

This Privacy Policy applies to personal information of our Newsletter subscribers and visitors to our Substack website. By subscribing to or using our Newsletter, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not subscribe or unsubscribe at any time.

Substack Platform: Our Newsletter is offered through Substack. This means Substack Inc. will also collect and process your information as a service provider on our behalf. We incorporate relevant parts of Substack’s Privacy Policy here, but we encourage you to review Substack’s own Privacy Policy at substack.com/privacy for details on their data practices. In summary, Substack provides the infrastructure to send you emails and host our content, and they gather certain data (like email open rates and site visits) which they share with us. We use and further disclose that information as described in this Privacy Policy.

INFORMATION WE COLLECT

We collect personal information about you in a few ways: (1) information you provide to us directly, (2) information collected automatically as you interact with our emails or website, and (3) information from third parties (such as if we import an existing subscriber list into Substack). Below we explain the categories of personal information we collect and why. Please note: We do not knowingly collect sensitive personal information (like Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account passwords, precise GPS location, or biometric data) as part of the Newsletter. We ask that you do not send us any sensitive personal details in your communications or posts.

The types of personal information we collect include:

Contact Information and Identifiers: When you subscribe, you provide your email address and (optionally) your name. This allows us to create your subscription and send you the Newsletter. We may also assign an internal subscriber ID to manage your subscription. If you create a Substack account or profile, you might also provide a username, display name, or profile photo – we can see this information as the publisher.

Payment Information (for Paid Subscriptions): Important: Payment transactions are handled by our third-party payment processor (currently Substack uses Stripe). We do not receive or store your full credit card number. Stripe (or the relevant processor) collects your payment card information and billing details securely on our behalf. We may receive limited information such as your billing name, email, payment method type, and a transaction confirmation. This information is used to manage your subscription access and comply with financial record-keeping. (See Stripe’s Privacy Policy for how they handle your payment data.)

Communications and Content: If you contact us via email or other means, or if you participate in interactive features of the Newsletter (for example, by leaving comments on posts or responding to polls), we collect the information you share. This includes the content of your messages, any feedback you provide, and any personal data you include in a comment. Please remember that comments or content you post publicly on our Substack site (including your display name) can be seen by others. We use this information to respond to you, address your requests, and facilitate community features. Public comments are visible to other readers by design, but we do not sell this information.

Device and Browsing Information: When you visit our Newsletter website on Substack or click links in the emails, certain information is collected automatically by Substack and our analytics tools. This includes your IP address, browser type, device type (e.g., mobile or desktop), operating system, unique device identifiers or cookie IDs, and similar technical data. We also collect information about how you navigated to our site (referring URL) and what pages or posts you view. This device and browsing information is collected via cookies and similar tracking technologies set by Substack or our third-party analytics providers. We use this data to ensure the website functions properly, to debug and secure the site, and to analyze overall reader engagement with our content.

Usage and Analytics Data: We and Substack collect data about your interactions with the Newsletter, such as whether you open our emails, when you open them, what links you click within the emails, which posts you read on the site, and how long you spend on our content. This helps us understand what topics or articles are popular and measure the performance of our Newsletter. Substack automatically gathers email-open and link-click metrics through tiny images (tracking pixels) and other techniques whenever we send you an email. We can see, for example, that a certain percentage of subscribers opened a particular newsletter or clicked on a specific link. This information is provided to us through Substack’s analytics dashboard. We may also use additional analytics services to track aggregate engagement with our site or emails.

Approximate Location Data: We may infer your general location (city, state, or country) from your IP address or the region you listed in your profile. This non-precise geolocation helps us understand our readership distribution (e.g., how many subscribers are in different states or countries). It also helps us comply with region-specific requirements (for example, showing you relevant privacy notices or opt-out tools based on your state). We do not collect or use precise GPS location data. The location information we gather is coarse and not accurate to your exact address — for instance, we might know that a subscriber opened our email in Seattle, WA but not your street or exact coordinates.

To summarize our data collection and sharing practices, the table below outlines the categories of personal information we collect, the purposes for which we use each category, and the categories of third parties with whom we may share or sell that information. (In this context, “sell” means transferring data to a third party for monetary or other valuable consideration, and “sharing” means disclosing data for targeted advertising purposes, as defined under applicable laws.)

HOW WE USE YOUR INFORMATION

We use the personal information we collect for the following business and commercial purposes:

To Provide the Newsletter and Services: We use your email and any account information to register you as a subscriber and to deliver our Newsletter issues and other content to you. For example, we will use your email address to send you the Newsletters you signed up to receive, and to authenticate your access to subscriber-only posts if applicable.

Communication: We may send service-related communications, such as confirming your subscription, responding to your inquiries, or sending important notices (like updates to this Privacy Policy or our terms). If you contact us with questions or requests, we will use your information to respond.

Analytics and Improvement: As described, we analyze engagement data (opens, clicks, reads, etc.) to understand what our readers enjoy and to improve our offerings. This helps us write content that better serves our subscribers’ interests. We may also use aggregated analytics (for example, overall open rates or subscriber counts) to evaluate and improve newsletter performance or to inform potential sponsors/advertisers about our audience engagement (typically we would share such data in an aggregated format, not tied to individual identities).

Advertising and Marketing: We may use your information to market our Newsletter or related projects. This includes using your engagement data to retarget you with ads about The Radical New Vision on other platforms (for example, showing you an ad on Facebook about our new content). It also includes creating lookalike audiences – using subscriber data to find similar audiences on ad platforms. Additionally, we might share your information to advertisers who want to reach our subscribers in “cross-context” ways. For instance, we might provide a list of active readers and email addresses, and corresponding analytics, to an advertising partner who then displays targeted ads to those readers on their ad network. We do not allow third parties to send you their own email marketing using your email address, but they may show you ads as a result of our data sharing.

Compliance and Legal Obligations: We will use and disclose personal information as necessary to comply with applicable laws, regulations, legal processes, or governmental requests. For example, we may retain certain transaction records for tax or accounting purposes. We may also use personal information to enforce our terms of service or to protect our rights or the rights of other users (for instance, to investigate misuse of the Newsletter, fraud, or security incidents).

Safety and Abuse Prevention: Your information (like IP addresses or user reports) may be used to detect, investigate, and prevent fraudulent transactions, spam, abuse, security incidents, and other harmful activity. This ensures the integrity of our Newsletter and the safety of our subscribers.

We strive to limit our use of personal information to what is relevant and reasonably necessary for the above purposes. If we ever want to use your personal data for a purpose materially different from what is described in this Privacy Policy, we will update this Privacy Policy and, if required by law, notify you or obtain your consent.

HOW WE SHARE OR DISCLOSE INFORMATION

We do not disclose your personal information to third parties for their independent use except in the situations described here. In general, we share information in order to run our newsletter business (with service providers and platform partners), to carry out advertising as described, or if legally compelled. Here are the types of third parties with whom we share data and why:

Service Providers (Processors): We use trusted third-party companies to operate and support the Newsletter on our behalf. These include Substack (our Newsletter hosting and distribution platform), email delivery services, cloud hosting providers, customer support tools, and other IT services. These service providers process personal information under contracts that restrict them from using your data for any purpose other than providing services to us. For example, Substack stores our subscriber list and sends out our emails; it also collects your engagement data and shares it with us. Similarly, if we use an analytics service like Google Analytics, the information about your device or browsing is processed by Google Analytics solely to provide aggregated insights to us. We ensure any service providers we use are bound to protect your data and comply with applicable privacy laws.

Payment Processor: If you make a payment (for a subscription or other purchase), your information is shared with the payment processor (such as Stripe) and your bank or credit card issuer to complete the transaction. The payment processor may retain your payment details to process future payments (e.g., recurring subscription billing) and for its own legal obligations. We receive confirmation of payment and basic information like the last four digits of your card, but not the full card number. We may also share your email with the payment processor to send you receipts or payment-related communications.

Advertising and Marketing Partners: As noted, we may share certain data with third-party advertising networks, social media platforms, or marketing partners in order to reach you and others with ads about our content or to monetize our audience data for their own purposes. This could involve us transferring a list of subscriber names, email addresses or identifiers (for example, a hashed version of your email address) and analytics to a platform like Facebook or Google or to a third party so they can match and add those users to a custom advertising audience. It could also involve embedding a partner’s pixel or code on our site or emails that collects engagement information and reports back to that partner for ad targeting purposes. These partners then use the data to show targeted advertisements to you on websites or apps. Importantly, these partners are not allowed to use our subscriber information to market their own products directly to you (outside of displaying ads to you) or to resell your information. They only get to use it to assist in delivering our advertising or advertising of our sponsors or partners.

Analytics Partners: We may use third-party analytics tools (in addition to Substack’s built-in analytics) to better understand our audience. For example, if we use Google Analytics on our Substack site, Google may collect device identifiers and browsing info through cookies and similar tech. However, we configure such analytics services to focus on aggregate statistics and not to share identifiable data with Google for their own use when possible. We do not knowingly allow analytics providers to use the data we share for their independent purposes beyond providing services to us.

Business Transfers: If in the future The Radical New Vision or its owner(s) are involved in a merger, acquisition, sale of assets, or other business transaction (including bankruptcy), user information (including personal data) may be transferred to the successor or new owner as part of that deal or transfer. If that happens, we will ensure any new owner is bound to respect the personal information as described in this Privacy Policy, and we will provide notice of any significant change in data handling.

Legal Compliance and Protection: We may disclose personal information when required by law, subpoena, or other legal process, or if we have a good faith belief that disclosure is reasonably necessary to (a) comply with a legal obligation, (b) protect and defend our rights or property, (c) prevent or investigate wrongdoing in connection with our services, (d) protect the personal safety of users or the public, or (e) protect against legal liability. For example, if a law enforcement agency lawfully requires subscriber information, we may provide it after verifying the request.

With Your Consent: In cases where you have explicitly given us consent to share your information with third parties, we will do so in accordance with that consent. For instance, if we ever run a promotion or partner with another organization and you opt-in to have your info shared with them, we will honor that (but such scenarios will be clearly explained at the time of obtaining your consent).

No Third-Party Direct Marketing: Aside from the advertising use described, we do not share your personal information (especially contact details like email) with unrelated third parties for them to send you direct marketing communications. In other words, you will not suddenly start getting emails or phone calls from other companies because of any information you gave us. If that policy ever changes, we would only do so with appropriate notice and any required consent.

Sale of Information and Targeted Advertising

What Does “Sale” or “Share” Mean in This Context? Under certain state laws, some of our data sharing practices for advertising could be considered a “sale” or “sharing” of personal information, even if we don’t literally exchange data for money in all cases. Specifically, when we transfer your personal information, analytics and usage data to third-party marketing or ad partners so that they can help deliver targeted advertisements to you (or to others like you) on non-The Radical New Vision platforms, this may be considered a sale (if there is any exchange of value) or sharing (if just for cross-context behavioral advertising) of your personal information.

What Information is Sold/Shared? The only personal information we sell or share for targeted advertising purposes is the described above. For example, we might share the fact that a user with an email address opened our last 5 Newsletters and clicked links about a specific topic with an advertising partner. That partner might then use that information to place an ad for an upcoming related event in front of that user on another website. The categories of information involved typically include online identifiers (like a cookie ID or hashed email), email addresses and interaction data (like the fact you opened an email or visited a page). We do not sell your actual name, email address, or any contact info to third parties for them to directly contact you or market to you. And we do not sell any sensitive information (we don’t collect sensitive info in the first place).

Purpose of Sale/Sharing: The purpose of this data sharing is to promote our content and monetize our readership data. It allows us and our advertising partners to show you ads that are more likely to be relevant because they’re based on your engagement with our Newsletter. For example, if you consistently read articles about a certain topic in our Newsletter, we might work with a partner to show you an advertisement related to that topic on another platform. Additionally, if we have sponsorship arrangements, we might provide sponsors with the ability to target ads to our “audience segments” (e.g., subscribers interested in sports or tech) on social media. This targeting is done by us sharing the relevant segment data with the platform.

Your Right to Opt Out: You have the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information for targeted advertising. We provide ways for you to exercise this right – please see “Your Rights and Choices” below for details on how to opt out and instruct us not to share your data with third-party advertising partners. If you opt out, we will stop including your personal information in the data we share with such partners and cease any future “sales” of your data.

Minor Consumers: We do not knowingly sell or share personal information of consumers under 13 years of age or 16 years of age in certain jurisdictions. Our content is not intended for children (and in fact, you must be 13 or older to sign up, as discussed under Children’s Privacy below). If we learn that we inadvertently sold personal information of a child under the specified age, we will delete that information and honor applicable laws.

YOUR RIGHTS AND CHOICES

Depending on applicable local laws, you may be entitled to ask us for a copy of your personal information, to correct it, erase or restrict its processing, or to ask us to transfer some of this information to other organizations. You may also have rights to object to some processing activities or to request restriction of some processing activities. Where we have asked for your consent to process your personal information, you may also have the right to withdraw this consent. These rights may be limited in some situations or in accordance with applicable law – for example, we cannot delete your personal information when we can demonstrate that we have a legal obligation to retain it. In some instances, this may mean that we are able to retain data even if you withdraw your consent or you delete your account.

Where we require personal information to comply with legal or contractual obligations, then provision of such information is mandatory: if such information is not provided, then we will not be able to manage our contractual relationship, or to meet obligations placed on us. In all other cases, provision of requested personal data is optional.

We hope that we can satisfy any queries you may have about the way we process your Personal Information. If you have any concerns about how we process your personal information, or would like to opt out of marketing, you can get in touch by using the contact information below in this Privacy Policy.

Additional Choices:

Unsubscribe from Emails: You can always unsubscribe from the Newsletter itself without needing to delete all your data. Every email we send includes an “Unsubscribe” link at the bottom. By clicking that link, you can opt out of receiving future newsletter emails from us. You can also unsubscribe by contacting us using the contact information found below in this Privacy Policy and requesting removal. Please note that unsubscribing from the Newsletter will stop new emails, but we may still retain certain information (like your email) in our suppression list to ensure we honor your do-not-email request. Unsubscribing from the Newsletter is not the same as deleting your data entirely; if you want complete deletion, please make a separate deletion request as described above.

Cookies & Tracking Technologies: Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser setting to decline cookies or alert you when cookies are being used. Disabling cookies may affect your experience with the Newsletter and site. Substack and our analytics/advertising partners may use cookies or pixel tags in our emails and site. You can use browser controls or extensions to block or delete cookies. There are also industry opt-out sites such as the NAI’s opt-out page or the DAA’s WebChoices tool that allow you to opt out of targeted advertising cookies from participating companies. Keep in mind that cookie-based opt-outs must be set on each device/browser you use, and if you clear cookies, the opt-out may be cleared as well.

HOW TO EXERCISE YOUR RIGHTS

Submitting Requests: You (or an authorized agent acting on your behalf) can exercise any of the rights above by reaching out to us using the contact information below in this Privacy Policy.

Verification: For privacy and security, when you submit a request, we need to verify that you are who you say you are (or that your authorized agent has the right to make the request). If you have an account with us (i.e., a subscription), we may verify your request by sending an email to the address on file and asking you to respond or click a verification link. For certain requests (like access or deletion of specific pieces of data), we may ask for additional confirmation or information to match against our records (for instance, asking you to confirm a past newsletter subject line you received or other details). We will only use the information provided in a request to verify your identity or authority to make the request and to log our compliance.

DATA RETENTION

We retain personal information only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it was collected, or as required or permitted by law. In practice, this means:

If you are an active subscriber, we will keep your personal information for the duration of your subscription so we can continue to provide the Newsletter to you.

If you unsubscribe from the Newsletter (and do not make a deletion request), we may retain your email address on an opt-out list to ensure we don’t accidentally send you emails in the future. We may also retain basic information about the transaction (e.g., the fact that you subscribed and unsubscribed) for record-keeping.

If you request deletion of your data, we will delete the personal information from our active systems (and instruct Substack to do the same) except for any information we are required to keep. We may keep minimal information necessary to document that we fulfilled your request in case of audits or legal requirements.

For payment records, if applicable, we generally need to retain those for a certain period (e.g., 7 years for financial records) to comply with tax and accounting laws.

We also maintain backups of our data for reliability. If your personal information is in a backup archive, we will remove it when that archive is replaced or destroyed in accordance with our backup schedule. We do not use archived data except for rare disaster recovery purposes.

We periodically review the data we have and delete or anonymize information that we no longer need for the business purposes described. If we anonymize (de-identify) data, we may keep and use that data in a de-identified form indefinitely (for example, keeping aggregated analytics that no longer identify any individual).

In summary, we keep your personal information for as long as you have an ongoing relationship with us, plus a reasonable period thereafter for legal or operational reasons. When we no longer need the data, we securely delete it or anonymize it.

DATA SECURITY

The security of your personal information is important to us. We implement reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect your information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. Despite these precautions, no method of transmission over the Internet or method of electronic storage is completely secure. Email communications and websites can have vulnerabilities. While we strive to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee absolute security. You can help by using a strong, unique password for your account (if applicable) and by keeping your login credentials confidential. If you believe your interaction with us is no longer secure (for example, if you suspect your account has been compromised), please contact us immediately so we can investigate.

In the event of a data breach involving your personal information, we will notify you and any applicable authorities as required by law.

CHILDREN’S PRIVACY

Our Newsletter and website are not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly solicit or collect personal information from children under 13. If you are under 13, please do not subscribe or provide any information to us. Parents or guardians: if you become aware that your child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

UPDATES TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY

We may update or change this Privacy Policy from time to time as our practices evolve or as required by law. If we make material changes to how we collect or use your personal information, we will notify you by (for example) sending an email to subscribers or posting a prominent notice on our Substack site prior to the change becoming effective. The “Last Updated” date at the top of this Privacy Policy will always indicate when the latest changes were made.

We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically to stay informed about how we are protecting your information. Your continued subscription or use of the Newsletter after any changes to this Privacy Policy constitutes your acceptance of the updated terms (to the extent permitted by law). If you do not agree with any updates, you may need to unsubscribe or exercise your rights as described.

DO NOT TRACK POLICY

Your browser may offer you a “Do Not Track” option, which allows you to signal to operators of websites and web applications and services (including behavioral advertising services) that you do not wish such operators to track certain of your online activities over time and across different websites. Our services do not support Do Not Track requests at this time, which means that we collect information about your online activity both while you are using the services and after you leave our services.

Summary Table of Data Collection and Sharing Practices

The table below outlines the categories of personal information we collect, the purposes for which we use each category, and the categories of third parties with whom we may share or sell that information.
